| I used Azusa 4 1/2 inch drum brakes. Others have used them and they say they work ok. When I bought the hubs form Ken Perkins I also got a spacer for the drum. This is allows the drum (or disk) to miss the spoke heads. I added a step onto the spacer so it would center the drum on the spacer. Then drilled the holes for the drum using the spacer holes as a guide. Side note here, The lathe I use is an Atlas TH42 that I restored a couple of years ago. If you are interested in the restoration click here. My brakes have aluminum backing plates so I had to weld on some disks on the axel to mount the brakes. I also had a machine shop dill the hole in the brake backing plate for a tight slip fit. I used this to ensure the brake was centered on the axel. Then I drilled the holes in the backing plate and the axel plate at the same time. Then I enlarged the hole in the backing plate to clear the bronze bushing. I did this because I did not want the wheel riding against the aluminum. They look good. hopefully one day they will work good too. |
